BALANCING MENOPAUSE

Over the past few years there has been talk about phytoestrogens as women seek to use more natural ways to balance their body's reproductive system which is regulated mainly by the hormones progesterone and oestrogen.

Too much red meat, caffeine and alcohol may aggravate menopausal symptoms.

Scientists have found plants to contain hormonal substances similar to animal estrogens. They have been termed phyto-estrogens. These plants were initially brought to interest as farmers noted their animals becoming infertile after grazing on clover, alfalfa or soy seeds.

Some of these plant substances can, when converted in the body, mimic the body's estrogen. There are estrogenically active compounds in many foods including soya beans, corn, linseed, alfalfa, olives, beans and probably plants in the celery family such as fennel, aniseed, coriander, parsley, parsnips.

There has recently been an upsurge in the interest in using soy products for health as it has been noted that Asian women have a reduced incidence of symptoms indicative of menopausal imbalance and they also have much soy produce in their diet. To be noted is that the soy products they use are predominantly fermented products such as tofu, tempeh and nattokinase.

There is much that can be done naturally to support the balance of the female reproductive system and most symptoms can be gotten under control in a relatively short time.
