HELP WITH HORMONES

Women sometimes use herbs deemed ‘phyto-estrogens’ and wild yam creams to attempt to balance their body’s hormones with minimal drug interference.

The menstrual cycle and female reproductive system is regulated mainly by the hormones progesterone and oestrogen. Hormones consist of proteins or steroids.

Normal human reproductive function requires the complex interplay of endocrine and target organs. Androgen from the testes in men and estrogens from the ovaries in women stimulate organs of the reproductive system and send back information to the central nervous system and hypothalamus and pituitary glands to influence hormone secretion.

Many women take ‘The pill’, usually a combination of hormones estrogen and progesterone, for contraception and control of reproductive/hormonal imbalance.

High levels of Estradiol and Estrone, which have been linked with breast cancer, have often been in estrogen medications produced by drug companies. Estriol by contrast is thought to be very low in cancerogenic activity. Some vaginal creams are made with estriol.

Some women taking the pill are vulnerable to a higher incidence of blood clots especially if they smoke and/or have high blood pressure. It may also cause skin pigmentation. A lesser danger, except to their relationships, may be a lowering of sex drive. Taking the contraceptive pill may affect nutrient levels, lowering Vitamin B2, zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B12, folic acid while causing increased levels of copper, calcium, iron, Vitamin K.

There is some controversy as to whether estrogens do build up bone in postmenopausal women or slow its progression. Recent thoughts are that progesterone helps to regenerate new bone growth.

Too much red meat, caffeine and alcohol may aggravate menopausal symptoms.

Scientists have found plants to contain hormonal substances similar to animal estrogens. These plants, termed phyto-estrogens, were initially brought to interest as farmers noted their animals becoming infertile after grazing on clover, alfalfa or soy seeds.

Some of these plant substances can, when converted in the body, mimic the body’s estrogen.

Herbal prescriptions usually contain a combination of different herbs, addressing the particular problems at hand, to obtain a balanced chemistry to balance the hormones.

Vitamin B6 along with a multi-B and minerals plays its part in creating a balance.

Wild yams creams may through processes we do not fully understand allow the body to create a more balanced state in relation to hormones.
